There are some major differences between a gazebo and an arbor. An arbor could be called a gateway to an outdoor space. Many times an arbor has vines growing up on them. Designs can include:

- Are built with a sturdy foundation and raised floor.
- Could be a shelter from a storm or offer shade, as the roof is completely covered. The only open area is usually the upper side walls.
Both a gazebo and an arbor are decorative fixtures; however, the gazebo may require a building permit, depending on its size and weight. Also, a gazebo would be more expensive to build, as there is quite a bit more to it than an arbor.
